Prince Harry, 41, and Duchess Meghan, 45, are preparing to move back to the United Kingdom with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, later this month. The family plans to establish a new base in Britain after six years in California, with the children set to begin school in the UK in September.

The move is expected to happen quickly, marking a major new chapter for the Sussexes as they balance their children’s education, family ties, privacy, and security.

One thing is already clear: the couple will not be moving into a royal residence. Instead, they are expected to live in a private, non-royal home outside London. Their Montecito property and home in Portugal will remain in the family’s possession.

Harry and Meghan Are Planning a Home Away From London

London does not appear to be their preferred new home base. British reports have pointed to the Cotswolds as one possible location, while the Northamptonshire area around Althorp has also been mentioned.

The latter would place Harry relatively close to his mother Princess Diana’s family. Harry has longstanding ties to his uncle Charles Spencer and recently visited Althorp with Meghan and their children.

However, the exact location of the family’s new home remains private. What is known is that it will be a private residence rather than a royal property.

Archie and Lilibet’s Schooling Adds to the Time Pressure

One major factor behind the timing appears to be the children’s education. Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, are enrolled to attend school in Britain from September, meaning the family is expected to relocate shortly before the new school year begins.

The return does not mean that Harry and Meghan are resuming official duties for the Crown. They will remain non-working royals and will continue their independent lives and professional activities while living closer to Harry’s family.

Frogmore Cottage Is No Longer an Option

One place the Sussexes will not be returning to is Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate. The five-bedroom property was made available to the couple after their wedding, but they were asked to vacate it in 2023 following their decision to step back from royal duties.

That makes a return to the property unlikely, with the family instead opting for a private home away from the royal residences.

Meghan’s Comments About Nottingham Cottage Remain Memorable

Before moving to the United States, Harry and Meghan also lived at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

In their Netflix documentary, Meghan recalled that the property was much smaller than its grand name suggested. She described it as surprisingly cramped despite being part of a royal palace complex.

The couple’s recent visits to Britain, including time with King Charles and Harry’s Spencer relatives, have added to speculation about their renewed connection to the UK. Meghan and the children also visited Althorp during their July trip, where they spent time at the Spencer family estate.

Now, with their children preparing to attend school in Britain, the Sussexes appear to be taking a significant step toward making the UK a more regular part of their family life.
