The vocalist, guitarist and producer, who helmed some of the most esteemed albums from the alternative music scene, was 61 years old. Albini was the producer on albums by Nirvana, the Pixies and PJ Harvey. Over the course of his career, Albini became known for his punk ethos, refusing to take royalties and resisting the rise of streaming services.

Steve was a real icon in the game

He also fronted the bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac, who was getting ready to release their first album since 2014 next week. Shellac formed in 1992 and had released a total of five albums prior to the upcoming release of 'To All Trains.' Among his producer credits are the Pixies' 1988 debut 'Surfer Rosa' and Nirvana's 'In Utero.'
