Princess Kate (44) has gradually returned to public life after months of treatment and recovery. That makes a case from that period—when she was receiving medical care at a London clinic in early 2024—all the more troubling. A former employee allegedly attempted to access her confidential patient records in order to sell them for profit. The UK data protection authority has now completed its investigation, bringing to a close a case that went far beyond an internal mistake and raised serious concerns about the protection of sensitive medical information.

Princess Kate Was at the Center of a Data Breach

According to reports, a former employee of the London Clinic received a formal warning from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The individual was accused of deliberately accessing confidential medical records with the intention of selling the information to third parties.

What made the case particularly alarming was the claim that Princess Kate’s file was among the records involved. Authorities viewed the incident as a serious breach of trust. During the investigation, several clinic employees reportedly came under scrutiny.

The London Clinic Calls It an Isolated Incident

The criminal investigation began in March 2024 after the clinic reported a possible case of unauthorized access. According to reports, the former employee received a warning after allegedly attempting to obtain and sell documents connected to Prince William’s wife.

A spokesperson for the private hospital described the situation as “a sad and isolated incident.” At the same time, investigators found no evidence of wider systemic issues within the healthcare provider. Following an internal review, the employee was reportedly dismissed.

ICO Stresses the Importance of Protecting Patient Data

For the data protection authority, the case represented more than a simple rules violation. Officials described it as the deliberate misuse of highly sensitive personal information for financial gain. Ian Hulme, Executive Director of Regulatory Oversight at the ICO, emphasized the seriousness of the matter:

“People should be able to trust that the personal information they're giving to healthcare settings is safe and protected from exploitation.”

When that trust is broken, authorities must respond. The ICO determined that a formal warning was an appropriate and proportionate outcome.

Kate Is Gradually Returning to Royal Duties

The conclusion of the case comes as the Princess of Wales cautiously resumes public engagements. She underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024 and subsequently stepped back from royal duties. It was later revealed that she had been receiving treatment for cancer.

At the beginning of 2025, Kate announced that she was in remission. Since then, she has steadily returned to royal life and public appearances. King Charles III (77) has also undergone cancer treatment, making the issue surrounding Kate’s medical records particularly sensitive for the Royal Family.
