Friendly split?

This Is Why Agnetha and Björn From ABBA Got Divorced

ABBA: Why Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus Broke Up

ABBA is still one of the most beloved bands of all time. Their separation in 1982 broke the hearts of many fans, but that wasn't all. The end of ABBA dream couple Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus was also difficult news to handle.

ABBA delighted fans not only with their music but also with their pair of dream couples. Singer Agnetha Fältskog married musician Björn Ulvaeu in 1971, while the other pair was Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson.

They formed the perfect quartet, which is why the band was so successful. Just as the relationships had a lot to do with ABBA's success, the breakup of the band was inevitably linked to failed marriages.

ABBA: Why did Agnetha and Björn break up?

Agnetha and Björn divorced in 1980, two years before ABBA broke up. Björn stated in interviews that they split on friendly terms after growing apart, despite sharing two kids together.

But Agnetha later explained that it was a difficult time, and she even had to seek therapy because of it. The couple separated at the height of ABBA's fame, and Björn had a new girlfriend just a short time later.

Shortly afterwards, Björn wrote the ABBA song "The Winner Takes It All," which features his ex Agnetha singing the lyrics: "But tell me, does she kiss / like I used to kiss you?"

ABBA: "The Winner Takes It All" as a break-up song

About singing the break-up song, Agnetha told the Evening Standard: "Björn wrote it about us after the breakdown of our marriage. The fact he wrote it exactly when we divorced is touching really."

She added: "I didn't mind. It was fantastic to do that song because I could put in such feeling.

"I didn't mind sharing it with the public. It didn't feel wrong. There is so much in that song. It was a mixture of what I felt and what Björn felt but also what Benny and Frida went through."

In the meantime, the band appears to have healed its old wounds. ABBA is back and even released new music in September 2021. Their first new album in 40 years will arrive in November.
