Anderson Cooper just became a dad this week, and he couldn't be more proud to tell the world! As People reports, Cooper made the big announcement on Thursday while he was live on air during his show Anderson Cooper 360°.
Cooper talks about becoming a father for the first time
"I think it's especially important in these times of trouble to try and hold onto moments of joy and moments of happiness even as we mourn the loss of loved ones, we are also blessed with new life," Cooper started off by saying. Then, he revealed to his viewers that he himself had welcomed new life into the world!
"I just wanted to take a moment and share with you some joyful news of my own," Cooper said. "On Monday, I became a father. I’ve never actually said that before out loud and it still slightly astonishes me".
Cooper "never thought" fatherhood would be possible
Cooper then introduced viewers to his son, Wyatt Morgan. As he explained, the name has ties to both of his own parents. That's because "Wyatt" was his dad's first name, while "Morgan" was a family name on his mom's side... as well as on a list of potential names for Cooper himself!
"I hope I can be as good a dad as he was," Cooper said in reference to his father, who passed away when Cooper was only 10 years old. Then, he admitted he never imagined fatherhood as a possibility when he was younger. "As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child," he shared. "I am so grateful for all those who paved the way".
Cooper wishes parents and brother could meet son Wyatt
Cooper continued on, expressing his gratitude that Wyatt was able to come into the world. "Most of all, I am eternally thankful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, watched over him lovingly, tenderly and gave birth to him. It is an extraordinary blessing".
He then got emotional again as he talked about how he wished his parents and brother Carter were around to meet his son. "I imagine them all together arms around each other, smiling, laughing and watching, looking down on us," he said.
Cooper's famous friends congratulate him on birth of son
The news anchor also shared his happy news via Instagram through a post that featured a series of photos of himself and Wyatt. And as Entertainment Tonight shares, many of Cooper's celebrity friends congratulated him on his new arrival!
Billy Eichner, Busy Phillips, and Magic Johnson all left Cooper sweet comments on social media about Wyatt's birth. Andy Cohen even made an Instagram post of his own that featured a photo of Cooper and Wyatt. "new life, new hope!" Cohen captioned it. "Wyatt Cooper, you couldn’t have come at a better time! I know a friend who can’t wait to meet you! ♥️"
