Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Anthony Edwards grew up in a creative family and is of Irish decent. He went to college before pursuing acting roles, attending University of Southern California to study theatre. He left college at 19 after making enough money from smaller roles to support himself. His first roles included co-starring opposite Helen Hunt in the ABC sitcom It Takes Two (1982) as well as a cameo in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and the main role of "Gilbert Lowe" in Revenge of the Nerds (1984).

In a 2018 interview with The Daily Beast, Edwards admitted that he "never felt any pressure about my career, and I’ve never met a man who said he wished he’d spent less time with his kids when they were little." He also revealed that his son Bailey will probably be the only one of his four children to take up the acting profession.
