• Austin Butler just won the Golden Globe for Elvis
  • He gave a recent interview discussing how he got the part
  • His ex Vanessa Hudgens helped out, but he didn't name her

For years, Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens were THE dream couple above all others. But in 2020, they announced their split after 10 years.

At the time, an insider revealed to E! News that distance was the main reason for the breakup. Austin Butler is on a roll after the split, even recently winning a Golden Globe for his performance in Elvis.

Austin owes the win to Vanessa, among others. At the time, she had urged him to audition for the role, as she herself once confirmed. But Austin seems to have forgotten that...

Austin Butler calls Vanessa Hudgens "a friend" in Elvis interview

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Austin Butler sat down with his fellow actors and discussed how he came to play the role of Elvis Presley.

The star, who is now happily with Kaia Gerber, did not mention the name of his ex Vanessa Hudgens. Instead, he explained like this: "I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend.

"There was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio and I was singing along and my friend looked over at me and goes, 'You've got to play Elvis.'

Also interesting:

"A couple of weeks later, I was playing the piano. [...] That same friend was there and I was playing the piano.

"She said, 'I'm serious. You gotta figure out how you can get the rights to a script.'"

Austin did not mention Vanessa Hudgens by name – and that's not sitting well with fans. On Twitter, some users commented on his story:

"Him calling Vanessa Hudgens a 'friend' PLEASEEEE" and "It's not a huge deal, but do people really not realize that saying 'friend' is disrespectful when someone was an integral part of almost a decade of your life??"

Others, however, side with Butler: "Nobody knows the status of Vanessa and Austin’s current relationship.

"Maybe he called her a friend because that’s what they currently are??" adds another user...
