Actor Dennis Quaid has filed a petition to end the $13,750 in monthly child support he pays to ex-wife Kimberly Buffington after their twins finish high school. According to People, the court filing was submitted on May 20 and cites terms from the former couple’s 2018 divorce agreement. Their 18-year-old twins are set to graduate in May and June this year, making the timing central to the request. The filing focuses on whether the support obligation should conclude once each child completes 12th grade.

Dennis Quaid Cites 2018 Divorce Terms

The filing points to language in the divorce agreement that says child support may end “when a child completes 12th grade (if still under 19 and a full-time high school student) or reaches the other enumerated endpoints, whichever occurs first.” That clause appears to be the basis of Quaid’s latest move. The actor and Buffington, his third wife, welcomed their twins in November 2007 in Santa Monica. With both children now at graduation age, the legal question centers on how the original agreement should be applied in 2026.

Kimberly Buffington Payments Could Also Be Prorated

The petition does more than address the monthly amount. It also asks for a change to an additional payment tied to Quaid’s annual income. Under the divorce terms, he must pay Buffington extra if his yearly income exceeds $1,314,000. In the new filing, he requested that any bonus amount for 2026 be prorated based on each child’s graduation date rather than calculated from his full-year income. That detail could affect the final total significantly if the court agrees with the adjustment request.

Dennis Quaid Shares Rare Update on Daughter Zoe

The filing arrives during a period when Quaid has also spoken publicly, albeit briefly, about his family. As reported by People, he recently gave an update on daughter Zoe after the deadly Texas floods. “My daughter was a few miles away from [Camp] Mystic, further north. Thankfully, their camp was okay,” said Dennis Quaid according to People. He added that the Hill Country camp experience is something children carry with them for life, underscoring how personal the news was for him.

Quaid also described the anxious hours before he was able to reach Zoe. “I heard about this as I was going to bed that night, and I tried to call her because I knew she was up there,” said Dennis Quaid according to People. He continued, “I didn't really get a lot of sleep that night.” The actor is also father to son Jack, whom he shares with ex-wife Meg Ryan. While the legal filing deals with support payments, it also lands at a moment when Quaid’s role as a father is back in public view.
