Redmayne even went on to win an Oscar for Best Actor thanks to his work on the biopic film The Theory of Everything, in which he played world-famous physicists Stephen Hawking. Another one of his most lauded roles came in 2015 with The Danish Girl, in which Eddie play a transgender woman called "Lili Elbe". His performance earned him another Oscar nomination.

But the actor now claims that his participation in that film was a mistake. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Redmayne revealed that he would not have said yes to the role today!

Eddie Redmayne Says Role Was A Mistake

“No, I wouldn’t take it on now. I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake,” he said. “The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don’t have a chair at the table. There must be a levelling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates.”

Redmayne believes that perhaps the role should have gone to a transgender actor instead as the film centered on an artist who undergoes one of the very first gender reassignment surgeries, and although the actor didn't catch any criticism at the time, it's hard to imagine that wouldn't be the case today.

Redmayne continues to be a strong public supporter of the LGBTQ+ movement.
