• Remember "Harry Potter's" cousin "Dursley?"
  • Harry Melling has changed a lot
  • This is what the actor does today

Harry Melling (35) became world famous for his role as "Dudley Dursley" in the 'Harry Potter' movies. "Dudley" is "Harry Potter's" maternal cousin. Again and again, there are arguments between "Harry" and the small, fat, and above all totally spoiled "Dudley". His parents, "Petunia" (Fiona Shaw) and "Vernon Dursley" (Richard Griffiths, †65), treat the boy like a baby, even during his teenage years, and fulfill his every wish.

If "Dudley" does not get what he wants, he goes completely berserk, screams, and lashes out. His diet consists almost exclusively of sweets and fast food, which also explains his body weight. During his elementary school years, his victim is mainly his cousin "Harry", whom he regularly beats up or makes fun of.

Later, he is in a gang of boys and is called only "Big D" by his buddies. "Dudley" and his gang instill fear in the children of the whole neighborhood and like to trash playgrounds.

One of the most memorable scenes in the 'Harry Potter' films is one where "Hagrid", played by Robbie Coltrane (†72), gave "Harry's" annoying cousin a piggy ringtail. Since then, "Dudley" has had a panic fear of magic. However, when he later narrowly escapes death by a Dementor kiss with "Harry's" help, the otherwise boorish boy even seems to want to express something like gratitude.

What Harry Melling does today

Harry Melling had already visibly lost weight during the "Harry Potter" filming. In 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1' (2010), the actor even had to wear a fat suit because he had lost a good half of his body weight after 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' (2005). Today, the 'Harry Potter' star is no longer recognizable! Harry Melling has maintained his weight and can hardly be compared to the little fat boy he was back then.

In the meantime, Harry Melling was mainly seen on stage in the theater. In 2012 he had a role in the play 'I Am a Camera', in 2016 he participated in the play 'Hand to God'.

But the Brit stayed in front of the camera. First in 2010 in the form of a guest role in the television series 'Merlin', then in 2016 in 'The Musketeers', and in 2017 in the film 'The Lost City of Z'. In 2019, he was among others in the film 'Waiting for the Barbarians'.

Then, in 2020, he had mega-success. At the side of Anya Taylor-Joy, he is in the Netflix miniseries 'The Queen's Gambit' as "Harry Beltik". Most recently, he starred in the Netflix mystery film 'The Memorable Case of Mr. Poe' alongside Christian Bale.

So with his weight loss, the young actor has shed not only excess pounds but at the same time his old role as "Harry Potter's" cousin "Dudley" and is now ready for many more roles.

Harry Melling, by the way, comes from a family of actors. His grandfather, Patrick George Troughton (†67), became famous above all as "Doctor Who" in the cult science fiction series of the same name (1966 to 1969).
