Idris Elba has picked a side in ongoing debates about Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey. In a new chat with ET, Elba was asked to weigh in on the royal topic and Meghan "telling her story of the Black experience" in her interview.

Elba answered firmly and succinctly: "I will say that everyone has to have their opportunity to speak up about what they feel. You cannot take someone's voice away, that's what we have to communicate."

The 48-year-old English actor is known to be a friend of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and, however subtly, he appeared to be tuned in to the hot topic of recent weeks that's been Oprah with Meghan and Harry.

Idris Elba: Informed on Royal Family news?

Elba's answer highlighted a key point of the interview, which was that Meghan felt "silenced" by the royal institution. As a result, she was unable to defend herself against press misinformation but at the same time felt unprotected by the Royal Family.

Elba's opinion also countered vocal critics such as Piers Morgan and Duchess Kate's uncle Gary Goldsmith, who have made demeaning comments about not believing anything Meghan says — effectively trying to silence her.
