Cleveland, Ohio native has been an active actor both on stage and on screen for over 40 years. He starred alongside Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson in the 1981 production of A Soldier'sPlay while he was a part of the Negro Ensemble Company.

He moved from New York to Los Angeles and landed recurring roles on hit shows like Another World, X-Files, The West Wing, Roseanne, Beverly Hills, 90210, JAG, and Six Feet Under.

Then in 2005, he was cast in Grey's Anatomy as "Dr. Richard Webber." James has had an impressive and extensive career with over 80 roles under his belt.

His two children have followed in his footsteps and are also pursuing performance careers. Carl is a popular Hip-Hop artist and his daughter Gavyn played "Lila" in season 14 of Grey's Anatomy.
