Joaquin Phoenix is opening up about mental health

It should come as no surprise that Joaquin Phoenix goes through great lengths to get into his character since every role he plays turns to gold.

The actor opened up in an online exclusive interview with GQ magazine to talk about the anxieties he has surrounding his roles.

“It’s pure anxiety. And I love it," he said about his peculiar take on preparing.

However, this anxiety does cause the actor to skip out on rehearsal's and read-through's, which can leave some coworkers with a bad taste in their mouth.

“There’s no f--g way I’m doing a read-through,” Phoenix told director of Joker, Todd Phillips. Fellow co-star Robert De Niro also had an argument with Phoenix about his refusal.

Phoenix has a theory about acting, and it is not about perfecting lines or stage directions. He claims that, “You just act and it’s so ugly.”

The actor says he came to this realization while playing Johnny Cash in the film Walk The Line.

During those days, the actor admits that he was partying and drinking heavily

"I wasn’t engaging with the world or myself in the way I wanted to," he admits.

"I was being an idiot, running around, drinking, trying to screw people, going to stupid clubs."

After his bad car accident, the Walk The Line star changed his ways, and quit drinking and smoking weed.

"There’s too many things I enjoy doing and I don’t want to wake up feeling hungover. It’s not a thing I fight against – it’s just the way I live my life,” he says.
