Julianna Margulies has opened up about how she feels about actors portraying LGBTQ+ characters even if they do not identify that way themselves. As Entertainment Tonight shares, Margulies spoke on the topic during CBS Mornings on Monday, addressing the response to her latest role as out lesbian news anchor "Laura Peterson" in the new season of Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show.
Margulies says characters' sexuality "doesn't matter" to her
Margulies acknowledged the fact that some have been critical of her playing "Laura" when she does not identify as queer. She said that people are "making assumptions" about her own life through this criticism, and believes that actors should have the freedom to take on roles outside of their personal lived experiences.
The star then went on to say that the sexuality of a character she plays "doesn't matter to me," and feels that those in the entertainment industry can play LGBTQ+ characters whether or not they are part of the community. "We're actors," Margulies said. "We're supposed to embody a character, regardless of their sexuality."
While she has no problem with playing a lesbian however, Margulies acknowledged that there should be some boundaries when it comes to actors taking on roles different from their own identities. She touched on the idea of actors playing characters who have a different ethnic background or gender, saying this issue is "a whole different story and I 100 percent agree with that."
