Liza Koshy apologizes for her past

Liza Koshy is one YouTuber you may recognize! Her funny disposition and online presence is one that quickly gained popularity, however, in the wake of social reform and the dismantling of systemic racism, Koshy has found herself in some hot water.

In a resurfaced video from 2016, fellow YouTuber and ex-boyfriend David Dobrick can be seen mocking the Japanese language after eating some foreign candy while on vacation in Hawaii.

Posting to Instagram, Koshy doesn't directly comment on which video she is referencing but did acknowledge the racist behaviour.

"You can be someone who has no intention to be racist, but because you’re conditioned in a world that is racist and a country that is structured in anti-Black racism, you yourself can perpetuate those ideas," Koshy wrote.

She continued, "While we focus on systemic anti-Black racism in the country, I’ve been hesitant to centre my voice. My work has been within but now I recognize and take responsibility for the times I was not the ally I am becoming today."

Koshy then went on to express how she is learning and adapting her behaviour with new knowledge.

"I am taking inventory, taking initiative and taking note that my impact and influence will weigh greater than my intention," she said.

While Koshy does identify as a woman of colour, she also recognizes that doesn't dismiss her from mistakes.

"As a woman of colour and self-defined 'little brown girl,' I have experienced the harm of prejudices in my own life," she said. "I am sorry to the beautiful communities I have caused hurt within."

She concluded her statement, "Thank you to my guardian angels in life and online who have been gracefully guiding this growth of mine, and I thank God for my continued awakening."
