Maya Hawke wants to share her songs with the world! Following her breakout role last year as fan-favourite character "Robin Buckley" in season 3 of the hit Netflix show Stranger Things, Hawke is now venturing into a music career. She took to social media on Wednesday to make the exciting announcement that not only has she dropped a brand new song, but her first album Blush will be released in June.
"Hey everyone. I hope you are safe and healthy and with plenty of food and toilet paper (but not too much) ...with close loved ones but social distancing yourself from others," Hawke wrote on Instagram. "The first single and video, BY MYSELF from my upcoming album BLUSH is out now wherever music is streamed. I hope it can serve as a bit of company in these solitary times".
Hawke says her upcoming album "happened accidentally"
Hawke may have just announced her album, but fans got the first taste of her musical abilities last fall when she released two singles, "Stay Open" and "To Love a Boy". As Pitchfork reports, Hawke said in a statement that Blush "happened accidentally". Then, she shared how she sees the result of the album she unintentionally created. “From my point of view, Blush is a collection of secret messages, hidden communications with the people in my life," Hawke revealed.
Both of her previously released songs are included in the album's tracklisting, but "By Myself" is the first official lead single off of Blush. It's a track that Hawke says is “about projecting ideas you have about yourself onto other people". The music video for the folky song is ethereal, featuring Hawke as she's seen in front of a starry background wearing various costumes, including a cowboy hat and angel wings.
While Blush isn't released until June 19th, Hawke has made her album available for pre-order on her official website, along with some merchandise. She also shared in her post about the album's release that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank for New York.
