Maya Rudolph was born July 27, 1972 in Gainsville, Florida. Of African-American and Jewish descent, Maya would grow up in LA under the influence of her musically inclined parents, singer Minnie Riperton and composer Richard Rudolph. After graduating from the University of California in 1995 with a degree in photography, Maya would land a gig as a backing singer for hit rock band The Rentals.
