Mel Gibson was born on January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York to Hutton Gibson and Anne Patricia. His father, who was a successful businessman and entrepreneur received $145,000 after winning a lawsuit due to a work related injury. This lead to the family of 8 to relocate to Sydney, Austrailia where the young Mel Gibson spent most of his youth.

Gibson studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) where he was classically trained in British theater and, later on, in screen acting. He was praised at a very young age for his abilities which eventually lead him to his first role in Max Max (1977) shortly after graduation.
