Samuel Frederick Smith was born in London, England on May 19, 1992. They attended St Mary's Catholic School while honing their singing and songwriting skills with a jazz pianist. Smith broke into the industry with features on Disclosure's song "Latch" in 2012 and Naughty Boy's "La La La" in 2013.

Fans got a taste of Smith's own musical stylings later that year, when the singer released their debut single "Lay Me Down". Smith's first album 'In the Lonely Hour' dropped in 2014. Not only did it debut in the number 2 position on the Billboard 200 chart— it also ended up going platinum!
