Actress Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death has been confirmed at age 36. According to Page Six, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said she died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. The manner of death was ruled an accident. Authorities said a 911 call came in on Aug. 16 at 1:51 p.m. for a reported cardiac arrest at a residence on Easley Bridge Road in Greenville. First responders and EMS arrived, began advanced cardiac life support measures, but she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
Coroner’s Office Details Greenville Response
Officials said Panettiere was found unresponsive inside the residence where she had been temporarily staying. The coroner’s statement said no signs of trauma were discovered at autopsy that would have contributed to her death. The listed substances include fentanyl and 4-ANPP, a chemical precursor associated with the illegal manufacture of fentanyl and related synthetic opioids. Alprazolam is widely prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders, while methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant and quetiapine is an antipsychotic medication. The findings add a clearer medical picture to the case after days of public questions.
Family Statement Followed Memorial in Malibu
The update came shortly after friends and relatives gathered for a memorial in Malibu, California. On Aug. 16, her father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death in a public statement. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” said Skip Panettiere according to Page Six. He also asked for privacy as the family processes the loss. The actress had built a long career in television and film, making her death a painful moment for colleagues and fans alike.
Hayden Panettiere Spoke Openly About Addiction
Over the years, Panettiere spoke candidly about opioid addiction, alcoholism and postpartum depression. In 2022, she discussed how substance use escalated after becoming a mother and how deeply it affected her daily life and relationships. She also addressed widespread misunderstandings about postpartum depression in earlier interviews, stressing that women need support rather than dismissal. Those public comments became a major part of her later advocacy. In recent years, she had shared more of that personal history in interviews, public appearances and in her memoir, which was released in May.

During the press tour, she also spoke about a brutal experience as a child star and the long shadow it cast over adulthood. In July, she canceled a planned appearance at Creep I.E. Con at the last minute. Her representative later said the change was due to a private family matter. That cancellation now stands as one of the last public updates before her death.
