• Emily Blunt is issuing an apology
  • She made an insensitive comment in a previous interview
  • THIS is what upset fans

Despite the fact that her films are always so well-received, the 'Devil Wears Prada' star received a bevy of online criticism this week in response to calling an American waitress "enormous" in a rediscovered 'Jonathan Ross Show' clip from 2012. As has happened with many celebrities in recent years, their past has come back to bite them. Blunt decided that it was best to issue a statement once the clip resurfaced online after so many years.

"I just need to address this head-on, as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12 years ago," Blunt told 'People' magazine. "I'm appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show."

Emily is making amends now

She continued, "I've always considered myself someone who wouldn't dream of upsetting anyone, so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for. And yet it happened, and I said it, and I'm so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better."

On visiting a branch of the Chili's restaurant chain, show host Jonathan Ross says: "If you go to Chili's you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous." Blunt replied: "Well the girl who was serving me was enormous. I think she got freebie meals at Chili's."

"Nothing wrong with that," Ross replies. The actress, 40, goes on to further describe the encounter and how the waitress recognized her, in the first place. Emily said she began asking her a series of excited questions about the movie, but she didn't believe it was actually called 'Looper'.

"She was like, 'Are y'all shooting a movie here?'" Blunt recalled in her best Southern accent. "And I said, 'Yeah, I'm shooting a film called Looper.' And she went, 'Looper?' And I went, 'Yeah.' And she went, 'Y'all just made that up.'"

As the clip has resurfaced on social media, fans took to Twitter to bash the star as they expressed the dismay at her offensive comment. One fan posted: "Emily Blunt being blatantly fatphobic wasn’t on my 2023 bingo card but here we are."

Clearly angry, another tweeted: "Ugh f**k Emily Blunt seriously was one of my fave actresses but turns out she’s a fatphobic unfunny mean girl who thinks it’s funny to point out the size of a server when it adds nothing to the story - for shame."

A third chimed: 'Emily blunt being fatphobic is so disappointing, i guess another one bites the dust'. And a fourth added: "Emily Blunt being cancelled 12 years after the interview where she was fatphobic. Big slay. I love to see it!"

However one fan did seem to stick up for the star as they pointed out that this clip is taken from over 10 years ago. "This was old story. This happened back in 2012 where she did this interview. Y'all serious chill a bit. Emily probably doesn't remember that at all now and has grown so much since. Stop digging old dirt," they said.

Blunt had a supporting role in the film opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. While she’s currently on strike as a member of SAG-AFTRA, she’ll most likely hit the awards season campaign trail hard when a contract is reached to promote her performance in Christopher Nolan’s 'Oppenheimer.'

Emily is currently in the running for her first ever Oscar nomination. Her performance as "Katherine Oppenheimer" is being campaigned for best supporting actress and it's unclear if this little event will derail that. It's hard to know what Hollywood will put up with these, and many others have been cast out for less.
