At times, tragic loss can even grow to define a star's legacy. Today, 1950s cultural icon James Dean remains known for his tragic death nearly as much as for his film work. But the rising star had earned high praise for performances in Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant, before he suffered fatal injuries in a car crash on Sep. 30, 1955. He was just 24 years old.

The 1997 death of Princess Diana shocked the world and tragically left two young sons without their mother. Diana's death, in a car crash while fleeing paparazzi in Paris, came a little more than a year after her divorce from Prince Charles. In addition to the paparazzi's influence, reports said the crash was caused by the reckless driving of Diana's driver, Henri Paul, who was also intoxicated. The Princess of Wales's partner, Dodi Fayed, also died in the crash.

Unimaginable tragedy struck at the home of Sharon Tate on Aug. 9, 1969. The young actress was among the home's five occupants who were murdered by followers of Charles Manson. The cult leader had sent them to get revenge on a former renter of the home, though the man no longer lived there. The gruesome murders ended the life of Tate, who was 8-and-1/2 months pregnant at the time, as well as Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Steven Parent.

Marilyn Monroe's life came to a tragic end when she died of a barbiturate overdose - ruled a probable suicide - in 1962. She was just 36 years old. "The King of Rock and Roll" died in 1977 at the relatively young age of 42. The popular music legend's health had begun to deteriorate by the '70s. At the time, he'd become addicted to barbiturates but continued to perform despite his drug abuse and multiple health conditions. Fans and critics observed an Elvis who was a shell of his former self in this period of failing health. Sadly, he died on Aug. 16, 1977, when he was discovered unconscious on the bathroom floor. It was a tragic end for the rock music pioneer.

Buddy Holly made music history in his very short lifespan. However, the rock and roll legend, born Charles Holley, died in a plane crash at the age of just 22.
