In a touching red carpet interview, Zac Efron (36) has expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the late Matthew Perry, who recently passed away at the tender age of 54. Efron, who lit up the premiere of his latest flick 'The Iron Claw' in Dallas, Texas, shared with 'PEOPLE' that he's open to the idea of bringing Perry's life to the silver screen.

"I'm honoured to hear he was thinking of me to play him," says Efron. "We'll see. I'd be honoured to do it".

"He was a mentor to me, and we made a really cool film together," Efron shared.

The connection between the two actors runs deep, with Matthew Perry having previously voiced his desire for Efron to star in a potential biopic about his life. Entertainment reporter Athenna Crosby recalled Perry's wish for Efron to take up the role, citing his stellar performance in '17 Again.'
