Prince Harry reportedly has his eye on one of the most iconic pieces from Princess Diana's wardrobe: her famous 'revenge dress.'

According to reports, the Duke of Sussex is considering bidding on the legendary black dress when it goes up for auction at Sotheby's in New York on December 9.

But his alleged motivation goes beyond owning a piece of royal fashion history. Harry reportedly wants to keep the dress in the family—and possibly give it to his wife, Meghan.

Princess Diana's Iconic 'Revenge Dress' Made History in 1994

On June 29, 1994, Princess Diana made an unforgettable appearance at a charity event at London's Serpentine Gallery.

She wore a striking black dress designed by Christina Stambolian, featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline, a fitted silhouette, and an asymmetrical hemline with a flowing chiffon train.

That same evening, a television interview aired in which then-Prince Charles admitted to being unfaithful during his marriage to Diana. The timing of Diana's appearance turned the outfit into a powerful fashion statement, earning it the nickname 'revenge dress.'

Prince Harry Reportedly Wants to Keep Diana's Dress in the Family

According to Radar Online, an insider claimed that Harry is determined to prevent the famous dress from ending up in a private collector's wardrobe.

The source suggested that the Duke of Sussex believes the historic piece should remain connected to Diana's family, with Meghan potentially becoming its next owner. However, Harry has not publicly confirmed any plans to participate in the auction.

Diana's Famous Dress Was Previously Auctioned for Charity

The legendary dress has already changed hands once. In 1997, shortly before her tragic death, Princess Diana auctioned off several of her famous outfits to raise money for charity.

According to reports cited by The New York Times, a Scottish couple purchased the 'revenge dress' for approximately £39,000.

Diana died later that year, on August 31, at the age of 36 following a car crash in Paris. Now, the iconic fashion piece is reportedly preparing to go under the hammer once again.

Could Meghan Become the New Owner of Diana's 'Revenge Dress'?

According to the insider quoted by Radar Online, Harry reportedly views the dress as a symbol of his mother's strength and independence.

"Diana wore it to clap back at Charles, Camilla and an institution that had made her miserable. In Harry’s mind, Meghan understands that story better than almost anyone," the source claimed. The insider also suggested that Meghan wearing—or simply owning—the dress could carry a powerful symbolic message.

"It would say: Diana survived them, Meghan survived them — and neither woman allowed the Palace to define her," the source added. Whether Harry will actually bid on the dress, or whether Meghan could one day wear the legendary outfit, remains to be seen.
