- Prince William proposed to Kate with Diana's famous ring
- A well-known story claimed Prince Harry gifted him the ring
- Harry calls the story "absolute rubbish" in his book Spare
Prince Harry has revealed a lie about himself and his brother! Princess Diana's butler Paul Burrell once claimed that Harry had given his mother's famous sapphire ring to his brother Prince William, so he could use it to propose to Kate Middleton.
But the piece of jewelry had never been in Harry's possession. He never even knew about William's marriage proposal beforehand either.
Prince Harry was not involved with Kate's engagement ring
Harry reveals the truth in his autobiography Spare. "News to me. All that time together in Lesotho [in Africa], [William had] never mentioned it," says Harry about William shortly before the proposal.
"The papers published florid stories about the moment I realized Willy and Kate were well matched [...] and thus decided to gift Willy the ring I'd inherited from Mummy, the legendary sapphire, a tender moment between brothers, a bonding moment for all three of us, and absolute rubbish."
Also interesting:
As Harry tells it, the ring had been intended from the outset for Kate and not for Meghan. Burrell originally claimed in The Diana Story documentary: "Harry said to [William], 'Wouldn't it be fitting if she had mummy's ring?'"
However, such a touching gesture never happened: "I never gave Willy that ring because it wasn’t mine to give. He already had it," writes Prince Harry.
So Harry never did his brother the favour, because the deep blue ring had been in William's possession since the death of their beloved mother...
