Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles began married life under intense public attention, but their private reality was far less idyllic. After their 1981 wedding, watched by an estimated 750 million people worldwide, the couple left for a 12-day Mediterranean honeymoon aboard the royal yacht Britannia. The trip exposed distance between them almost immediately. Charles spent long stretches reading on deck, while Diana mixed with staff and crew, a sign that the newlyweds were already moving through the occasion in very different ways.
Princess Diana Spots Camilla’s Gift on Charles
The tension sharpened when Diana noticed a pair of cufflinks Charles was wearing. The jewelry carried two intertwined C’s, and Diana immediately understood the reference to Camilla Parker Bowles. “Camilla gave you those, didn’t she?” Diana recalled according to People Magazine. Charles answered, “Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend,” said Princess Diana according to People Magazine. Charles Wrote of Separate Time on Britannia
The strain was not limited to one argument. Charles himself described a honeymoon marked by separate routines rather than shared time. In a letter from the yacht, he wrote, “Marriage is very jolly.” He also noted that Diana spent time chatting with sailors and cooks while he stayed “hermit-like” on the veranda deck with his books. The contrast painted a clear picture of two people with little ease between them. Even in the first days of marriage, their habits, interests and expectations appeared badly out of sync.
Diana Found More Signs Linked to Camilla
The cufflinks were only part of the problem. Before the wedding, Diana had already come across a bracelet Charles intended as a goodbye gift for Camilla. During the honeymoon, matters worsened when two photographs of Camilla reportedly fell out of Charles’s diary as the couple compared schedules. Those moments fed Diana’s growing distress. She later said the presence of Camilla overshadowed the trip and weighed heavily on her thoughts. What should have been a private escape instead became a period filled with suspicion, loneliness and mounting hurt.
The Honeymoon Became an Early Warning Sign
In later accounts, Diana said the trip left her feeling isolated while she was also dealing with bulimia and deep insecurity. “At night, I dreamt of Camilla the whole time,” Princess Diana told Andrew Morton. Royal biographer Catherine Mayer has argued that the honeymoon exposed how little Charles and Diana understood one another before marrying. That early fracture would only widen over the next decade. They separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, while Charles later married Camilla in 2005, years after Diana’s death in 1997.
