2020 Oscars: Storylines Going Into the Ceremony

Heading into the Oscars, the prior awards shows established category favourites among the films and performers. But with upsets and shocking moments at recent Oscars ceremonies, underdogs can never be counted out!

Would top prize favourite 1917 walk away with Best Picture - as it had at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs? Would Parasite receive yet another accolade in the Best International Film category, and possibly even challenge for Best Picture?

Would Joaquin Phoenix and Brad Pitt complete their awards season sweep of the Lead and Supporting Actor categories? Would Renée Zellweger and Laura Dern do the same in the Actress categories?

Also of note, a performance from Grammy-winner Billie Eilish was announced prior to the show. In addition, a tribute to the late NBA star and Oscar-winner Kobe Bryant was expected during the ceremony.

How did the night end up playing out? Read on to find out every winner at the 2020 Oscars!

The surprise winner of the night: Parasite

Parasite was the runaway winner at the 2020 Oscars, pulling off major upsets in the Best Picture and Best Director categories. The film also won the award for Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay. It was the first film not in the English language to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

The acting categories saw the four big winners complete their sweep of the awards show season. Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger repeated their wins in the Lead Actor and Actress categories, while Brad Pitt and Laura Dern did the same in the Supporting Actor and Actress categories.

The ceremony included a surprise performance of "Lose Yourself" by Eminem, and Billie Eilish sang "Yesterday" by the Beatles during the "In Memoriam" section of the program.
