Doogie Howser, M.D. is getting a modern reboot on Disney+! As Entertainment Tonight shares, the streaming platform announced on Thursday that a reimagined version of the medical sitcom— which is titled Doogie Kameāloha— has been given a 10-episode series order.

Doogie Howser reboot to focus on young mixed-race girl

The character of "Doogie Howser" was played by a young Neil Patrick Harris in the original '90s show, and became a breakout role for the actor. However, this new version will see a young girl in the lead instead! According to Entertainment Tonight, Doogie Kameāloha is set in Hawaii and "follows Lahela "Doogie" Kameāloha, a mixed-race 16-year-old girl, juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager."

"Guiding Lahela is her family, including her Irish mother, who's also her supervisor at the hospital, and her Hawaiian father struggling to accept that his daughter is no longer his little girl," the synopsis continues. Doogie Kameāloha was created by Kourtney Kang, who has also worked on How I Met Your Mother— which Harris coincidentally starred in! Production is slated to start later this year, with the show expected to debut sometime in 2021.

Doogie Howser Disney+ series "a very modern take" on the show

Disney+ President of Content and Marketing, Ricky Strauss, made a statement about the project. "Thirty years ago, a young medical prodigy took the world by storm and left a lasting impact on pop culture," he said. "Kourtney and the team at 20th Television have created a very modern take on this beloved property which will resonate with our global Disney+ audience. We can’t wait to introduce the world to the new Doogie!"

Carolyn Cassidy, President of 20th Television, also expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming reboot. "Doogie Howser, M.D. is beloved by everyone at our studio," she said, "so we knew that if we were going to reinvent it for a new generation, we had to have both the blessing and participation of the Bochcos and a creator with a fresh, new take that made us lean in."

"Kourtney’s vision for the character is so inspired, we’ve been dying to collaborate with Melvin and Jake again, and Disney+ is exactly the right home for this idea," Cassidy continued. "We couldn’t be more excited." We're certainly looking forward to seeing this exciting new take on a classic show, and finding out who will be cast as the new "Doogie"!

'MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE', Erik Per Sullivan, Frankie Muniz, Justin Berfield, Season 1.
