HBO is assembling the creative team behind its new Hellraiser series. The horror franchise began in 1987 with the first Hellraiser film, which was followed by another 10 sequels between 1988 and 2018.

The HBO series, however, will reportedly be an expansion of the mythology and universe surrounding Hellraiser - rather than a reboot or direct sequel.

Hellraiser and "Pinhead" head to HBO

Hellraiser is known for its recognizable lead antagonist, "Pinhead," who was portrayed by English actor Doug Bradley until 2005. The character is the lead "Cenobite" in the franchise's extradimensional world, created by author and filmmaker Clive Barker.

For the HBO series, Michael Dougherty and Mark Verheiden are attached as writers. Horror director David Gordon Green is in line to direct the pilot and initial episodes as well. Green was also behind Halloween, the 2018 entry in the storied horror franchise of the same name.
