• James Corden auditioned for The Lord of the Rings movies
  • He tested for a main character in the 2000s trilogy
  • Here's how Corden remembers his LOTR audition

The Lord of the Rings movies could have looked a whole lot different! In fact, James Corden has revealed that he actually auditioned for a lead role in the original trilogy.

This was way back in the early 2000s, when the LOTR franchise was casting its stars for the movies to come.

At the time, James Corden had performed a few TV and film parts, and was on the verge of becoming a star.

The Lord of the Rings starring James Corden as...

In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Corden recalled his LOTR audition for the character of... "Samwise."

He explained: "Everyone, every single person in London auditioned for Lord of the Rings. Everybody."

"I auditioned for Samwise… and I was doing it," Corden told the podcast host. "I was doing the accent and everything."

Corden said he and several friends who auditioned received callbacks the next day, but none of them advanced past the second audition.

So although today's Late Late Show host gave it his best shot, he may not have been all that close to portraying "Samwise Gamgee."

Of course, the important Lord of the Rings role went to Sean Astin, the American actor.

But with shows like The Rings of Power and more on the way – perhaps we could still see a James Corden-LOTR crossover some day.
