Jean-Claude Van Damme is set to make his streaming debut. The '80s action star, who still has a cult following today, has begun filming of Netflix's The Last Mercenary, an action-comedy set in France.

Jean-Claude Van Damme's new movie: The Last Mercenary

The "Muscles from Brussels" is joined in The Last Mercenary by cast members Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, and Miou-Miou. According to Deadline, the film's synopsis is as follows:

"The film sees Van Damme play a mysterious former secret service agent who must urgently return to the country when his estranged son (Decazza) is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat (Ivanov) and a mafia operation."

Van Damme told the outlet that he's excited to "take on a new genre" in the action-comedy hybrid. "I've always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo," he said of the French New Wave star, "and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon's script brings all these elements together in a very successful way - a beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action and a lot of humour."

Jean-Claude Van Damme shares "a bit of news" on new movie

Earlier this week, Van Damme teased the new project on his Twitter account. The Bloodsport star shared a visual with his figure performing the splits above Netflix's logo.

While 59-year-old JCVD still acts and has a solid fan base, The Last Mercenary will no doubt offer the most exposure to one of his projects in some years. To this day, he's continued to star in action roles with recent titles such as We Die YoungLukas, and Black Water. But we and JCVD fans will keep his new Netflix project on the radar until it arrives on the streamer!
