The Special Victims Unit of New York City is taking on a new full-time member. This week, Deadline announced that Canadian actor Demore Barnes will join the main cast of Law & Order: SVU in season 22, which will premiere next month. The actor, known from Hannibal and American Gods, gains series regular status in the role of deputy chief "Christian Garland."

After appearing in eight episodes of season 21, Barnes has been hired by Universal TV and Wolf Entertainment to join the regular cast of SVU in the new season.

According to Deadline, Barnes will return to the series as boss "Christian Garland," a character who debuted last season and became a recurrent figure in the cases of Captain "Olivia Benson" (Mariska Hargitay).

"Garland" is known in the New York Police Department for his leadership skills, being outspoken, analytical, and charismatic in the face of the challenges facing his department.

In recent years, Barnes has appeared on series such as Flashpoint, Hannibal, Covert Affairs, Open Heart, Hemlock Grove, The Flash, Chicago Justice, Chicago Med, 12 Monkeys, Suits and Titans.

In addition to his work on Law & Order: SVU, Barnes has recently been seen on miniseries American Gods, as "Mr. Ibis." Barnes now joins SVU regulars including Hargitay, Ice-T, Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino, and Jamie Gray Hyder. They began shooting season 22 last month, ahead of the season's Nov. 15 premiere.
