NCIS is continuing to adapt to production of season 18 amid the pandemic.

The series, which was the most watched on primetime TV in 2020, aired only three episodes over the fall schedule. And, now, more delays are affecting the show in 2021.

NCIS was set to restart production of season 18 on Jan. 4, which would've been followed by a new episode airing the next day, on Jan. 5. However, both those schedules have changed in 2021 due to a coronavirus surge in Los Angeles County.

NCIS season 18 episode 4 release date, production delayed

As Deadline reported, most American TV networks who produce series in Los Angeles are extending their holiday hiatuses until later in January. For NCIS, an L.A. production, the show will wait an additional week before now aiming for a Jan. 11 restart on production of the season.

These delays have also setback new episodes of season 18, but there is good news for fans: NCIS season 18 returns on Jan. 19 and, when it does, it will air Episodes 4 and 5 the same night. If all goes according to plan, another new episode will follow on Jan. 26.

New NCIS episodes in 2021 expecting cast reunions, exit

In 2020-21, patience has been required for NCIS fans. But season 18 is still expected to deliver on drama, including cast member returns and a notable exit. (Mild spoilers below.)

Fans have known Maria Bello is exiting the series this season, but it's still unknown when she'll do so. The "Sloane" actress had her final day on set in 2020, bidding an emotional farewell to her co-stars and the fans.

Also expected to return in the next few episodes is Margo Harshman ("Delilah," the wife of "McGee"), while Joe Spano ("Furnell") will keep his comeback going as well.
