The 'Mermaids' 1990 Movie Cast: Then & Now

The film Mermaids was released in the year 1990 and revolves around the life of a single mother and her two daughters in America during the early sixties. The touching but funny story was an instant hit, which was in part due to the amazing cast. Find out what they're up to now here!

The quirky and awkward 15-year old "Charlotte Flax" is going through puberty and constantly clashes with her mother "Rachel". Her mom's erratic lifestyle and the parade of men she has coming home with her are things that the pious "Charlotte" cannot stand. She is very religious and wants to become a nun, although her family is actually Jewish! She longs for an intact family and a father, whom she has never met.

The pretty brunette is an established Hollywood star today thanks to films such as Dracula and The Crucible. in 2001, she however caused a scandal when she stole designer clothes from a boutique. She was sentenced to three years probation, community service and a fine. Since then she hasn't done anything but be a brilliant actress, like on the Netflix hit show Stranger Things.

"Rachel Flax," the fun-loving mother, likes flirting— but time and time again, falls for the wrong men. Every time one of her short-term relationships comes to an end, she moves to another town with her daughters. After an affair with her boss, who is married, she moves her family from Oklahoma to the idyllic Eastport in Massachusetts.

Cher is 75 years old by now and seems not to have changed too much, thanks to some discreet visits to the plastic surgeon. She still enjoys a cult status as a singer and has received more than $200 million for her Las Vegas show, in which she starred from 2008 to 2011.

"Rachel's" younger daughter "Kate," played by Christina Ricci, is nine years old and loves to swim. Her biggest wish is to be a successful swimmer someday.

The little girl is now a beautiful woman who, unlike many other child stars, has maintained a stable and successful career. She met James Heerdegen on the set of the TV show Pan Am in 2012 and the two were married in August of 2014. One of her most successful roles was that of Zelda Fitzgerald in the Amazon original series Z - The Beginning of Everything. She stars in the new series Yellowjackets alongside Melanie Lynskey and Juliette Lewis.

"Louis 'Lou' Landsky" is the owner of the local shoe store in Eastport and eventually becomes "Rachel's" boyfriend. In his early forties, he is a great father figure to "Charlotte" and "Kate," and is also able to teach "Rachel" and the girls how to be a family.

After his great supporting role in Mermaids, Hoskins appeared in films like Hook, The Big Freeze, Enemy at the Gates, and Snow White and the Huntsman. In 2012, he withdrew from show business after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He died from pneumonia at the age of 71 on April 29 in 2014.

Michael Schoeffling played "Joseph 'Joe' Poretti," the 26-year-old caretaker of the convent up the street of the "Flax" residence, whom "Charlotte" is interested in. He eventually leaves town after he sleeps with "Charlotte".
