Planes, Trains and Automobiles is scheduled to get an update for a new generation.

On Aug. 17, Deadline reported that Will Smith and Kevin Hart signed on with Paramount Pictures for a remake of the classic 1987 movie. Both Smith's and Hart's companies will also produce the film, which has Aeysha Carr (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) attached to write.

Smith and Hart assume the lead roles in the newly-announced update of the 1987 road trip comedy. Steve Martin and John Candy starred in the original, which was directed by '80s movie mastermind John Hughes. It follows the comedic odd couple on a road misadventure as they each struggle to make home in time for Thanksgiving.

Given their on-screen personas, Smith would presumably take on Martin's "Neal," the irritable businessman, with Hart as Candy's "Del," the exuberant but big-hearted musician. In the 1987 original, Martin and Candy's odd-couple chemistry created a holiday film favourite that draws laughs and tugs at the heartstrings.

At this time, few details are known about the remake beyond Smith and Hart's participation, producers, and Aeysha Carr's writing role. But the two popular actors have indicated their faith in the project, seeing as their respective companies are in on the production.

It's also another remake of a beloved project that involves Smith's name. Last week, news broke that he's on as a producer of a dramatic remake of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Though Smith starred in the popular '90s sitcom, it doesn't appear as though he'll star in the reimagined TV series.
