Princess Amalia made a highly symbolic appearance at the state banquet honoring German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender, at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The 22-year-old wore a light blue evening gown by Rachel Gilbert, featuring intricate embellishments at the neckline that resembled sparkling brooches. She also sported the royal family’s dark orange sash. However, it was her choice of tiara that truly stood out: Amalia selected her mother’s wedding tiara, blending royal heritage with contemporary elegance.

Princess Amalia Wears Queen Máxima’s Wedding Tiara

The tiara holds special significance within the Dutch royal family. Queen Máxima famously wore it during her 2002 wedding to King Willem-Alexander. Created from historic pieces belonging to the House of Orange, it features diamond star brooches dating back to 1879 that once belonged to Queen Emma. For Amalia, the tiara has become more than a beautiful accessory. She first wore it in 2022 during Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th birthday celebrations, marking her debut tiara appearance.

Light Blue Gown and a Familiar Royal Choice

The fact that Amalia has chosen the tiara before adds even more meaning to her appearance. She also wore it during a state banquet for the Portuguese president in 2024. Even so, her styling in Amsterdam felt fresh and carefully curated. Her blonde hair was styled half up and half down, allowing the historic headpiece to take center stage. Paired with the soft blue gown and refined details, the look struck the perfect balance between youthful sophistication and royal tradition.

Queen Máxima Chooses a Gown With History

Queen Máxima also selected an outfit rich in symbolism. She wore a gown previously seen on Prinsjesdag in 2015. The design draws inspiration from the Japanese Hall at Huis ten Bosch Palace, incorporating its wall motifs through hand-painted and embroidered details. The dress carries additional significance, as Máxima also wore it for her official state portrait. She paired the gown with the sapphire enthronement tiara, reinforcing the ceremonial nature of the occasion.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier Visits Amsterdam

In addition to the royal couple and Amalia, Prince Constantijn and several distinguished guests attended the evening. The menu featured sea bass with tomato salad, white asparagus consommé with chamomile, and veal tournedos served with red wine jus, romanesco, green beans, carrots, and a truffle-filled potato. Dessert consisted of a chocolate tartelette with cream and dark cherries. Steinmeier and Büdenbender are in the Netherlands on an official state visit through June 11.
