Charlize Theron was honoured on November 3rd at the 2019 Hollywood Film Awards with the Career Achievement Award. She is only 44 years old, however she has already had huge success in the entertainment industry. ET spoke with the actress on the red carpet on Sunday, and she reflected on her impressive career. Theron talked about how she had to play lots of "wives and girlfriends" before breaking the mold with her role in the 2003 movie, Monster, which she credits as the role that changed the direction of her career.

"I mean, it's hard -- they really are like your children. But I think Monster was definitely a moment in my career where I realized the opportunity that I was given was a chance to show that I was capable of more and it did change my career," Theron explained about Monster in which she played the real-life sex worker turned serial killer, Aileen Wuornos. This particular role earned her an Oscar for Best Actress in 2004.

Charlize Theron's career is just beginning

Theron went on to explain that, "after that, I didn't have to fight so hard for those interesting parts anymore, and more opportunities came my way to get outside of my comfort zone and do things that were maybe not expected for me. I think from that moment on, I built a career that has kind of defined what I really wanted my career to be -- not typecast, not stereotypical roles, but to really do things that are interesting and challenges the psyche of how we look at people."

Charlize Theron also said that she's not going anywhere anytime soon, meaning it's only just the beginning of her career. She is playing Megyn Kelly in the upcoming movie Bombshell which is about the sexual harassment allegations against FOX news CEO Roger Ailes. She stars in this movie alongside Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and John Lithgow.
