Aly & AJ have given one of their classic songs a more adult update! On Monday, the duo— consisting of sisters Aly Michalka and AJ Michalka— released the long-awaited "explicit version" of their 2007 hit "Potential Breakup Song," which sees them dropping some more colourful language into the lyrics!

Aly & AJ include several swear words in new version of song

Aly & AJ's original version of the song was released in 2007, back when the duo was still signed to Disney's record label, Hollywood Records. One of the lead singles from their album Insomniatic, "Potential Breakup Song" is an infectiously catchy dance pop track that details a relationship gone wrong after an ex-boyfriend doesn't put in the effort to make it work.

"It took too long, it took too long, it took too long for you to call back, and normally I would just forget that," Aly sings. "Except for the fact it was my birthday, my stupid birthday." In the explicit version, "my stupid birthday" has been rewritten as "my f**king birthday"— and that's not the only lyric change! "I want my stuff back" is now "I want my s**t back," while "mess up a situation" becomes "f**k up a situation".

Aly & AJ's "Potential Breakup Song" has gained new popularity

Aly & AJ have continued to make music in the years since they released "Potential Breakup Song"! The duo put out their first EP Ten Years in 2017, which was followed up with 2019's Sanctuary. They also dropped their new single "Slow Dancing" earlier this month, and in November, they released We Don't Stop— a compilation album of many of their new songs, including "Attack of Panic" and "Good Love"!

As ET Canada also mentions, the original version of "Potential Breakup Song" has had a recent surge of renewed popularity thanks to TikTok, with quite a few users of the app recording videos of themselves passionately lip syncing to the track! And given fans' reaction on social media to Aly & AJ's explicit version of the song— which is currently topping iTunes charts— it's clear that the re-released "Potential Breakup Song" has also brought back some childhood nostalgia!
