• Princess Diana died at the age of just 36
  • She never got to meet her grandchildren
  • A good friend became Prince George's godmother

Julia Samuel played a special role in the life of Princess Diana. And now she's doing the same in the life of Prince George. Julia gave The Observer magazine touching insight into what it means to be the royal's godmother.

"I feel lucky I was such a good friend of Princess Diana. And I really love my godson, George. And it's a lovely way of loving her," Julia Samuel told The Observer.

Lady Diana: She met Julia Samuel at a party in 1987

These words show her attachment not only to Prince George but also to Princess Diana, who died far too early. The two women reportedly met at a dinner party in 1987 and were friends until Diana's death a decade later.

Julia Samuel, who is a psychotherapist, was seated next to Lady Di that evening when they met for the first time, and the two got along well right away.

Also interesting:

Now she gives Prince George a bit of the love that Princess Diana most certainly would've given him if she were here. And although Prince George will never meet his grandmother, he affectionately calls her "Granny Diana."

Prince George was the first-born grandchild of Princess Diana, born to her son Prince William and Duchess Kate.

Speaking to Elizabeth Day on the How to Fail podcast, Julia Samuel said of Diana and George: "She would have loved him so much. This is heartbreaking for all of them."
