Universal Pictures has ordered a remake of The Night of the Hunter. The original 1955 movie itself was an adaptation of the Davis Grubb novel of the same title. Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters starred in the 1955 version.
Variety exclusively reported news of the remake on Tuesday.

Charles Laughton, who is remembered primarily as an actor, directed the 1955 version of The Night of the Hunter. The crime drama with film noir influences was based on a true story about a minister-turned-serial killer.

Robert Mitchum delivered a memorable performance as the minister who marries a widow to go after her fortune. The movie is perhaps best-remembered for Mitchum's monologue about "hate" and "love," words which are also written on his knuckles.

Universal's The Night of the Hunter 2020 remake
For Universal's remake, so far, all that's known is that Matthew Orton will write the script for the film. He previously wrote Operation Finale and has credits on upcoming projects titled Battle of Britain and Knights - the latter of which is a Disney film.
The remake faces a difficult task if it hopes to match the quality of the 1955 film! But the new film won't be a period piece, but rather a contemporary update on the classic story.
This type of strategy recently produced a hit for the 2020 horror film The Invisible Man, which put a contemporary spin on the classic novel.
