Debra Messing is looking forward to virtually reuniting with her former Smash castmates! As People reports, the cast of NBC's Broadway-based musical drama series will be coming together once more on May 20 for a special livestream of Bombshell in Concert. This is what to expect from the event!
Bombshell in Concert livestream to benefit COVID-19 relief
Smash fans know that Bombshell is the fictional musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe that much of the series was centred on. And while Smash ended its run in 2013, Bombshell in Concert took place in 2015 as a one-night-only charity event at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre.
Bombshell in Concert is set to be streamed on Wednesday at 8 PM EST on People's website and social media channels. The performance features the cast of Smash performing songs from Bombshell, and during intermission, they will be reuniting via Zoom to talk about their time on the show. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Actors Fund, which has been providing aid to actors who are struggling amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
Messing says "thousands of people" wanted to see Bombshell
Debra Messing, who played writer and lyricist "Julia Houston" on Smash, said that tickets for Bombshell in Concert were in high demand when it hit the stage for its one-night-only Broadway show. "The original Broadway performance was a huge success," Messing shared with People.
"There were thousands of people who could not get tickets and it sold out. Our producers contacted us and said, ‘Let's air it, include live interviews from the cast via Zoom and raise money for COVID relief.'" The performance of Bombshell in Concert will be introduced by two-time Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger, with Difficult People's Julie Klausner hosting the live reunion.
Messing talks about the importance of charity The Actors Fund
Messing went on to explain why The Actors Fund is such a crucial charity to support during these uncertain times. "The Actor’s Fund is a national human services organization that meets the need of the entire entertainment community that includes all professionals, not just actors, in film, television, theater, music, opera, radio and dance," she told People.
"They provide help for affordable housing, training services, emergency financial assistance, health care, mental health support and more. It really is an extraordinary organization." Messing said that she hopes the event will not only raise money, but also provide people with some quality entertainment.
Messing hopes that Bombshell in Concert will "uplift people"
"My greatest hope is that we raise a ton of money to help everyone who is suffering as a result of COVID-19," she said. "But I also hope we uplift people. These are actors, singers and dancers who are regularly on Broadway. It’s that caliber of performers and it will be a lot of fun."
Apart from Messing, Smash cast members Christian Borle, Jaime Cepero, Will Chase, Brian d'Arcy James, Jack Davenport, Ann Harada, Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee, Wesley Taylor, Jeremy Jordan, Andy Mientus, Leslie Odom Jr., and Krysta Rodriguez are all set to make appearances during the reunion.
