Prince Edward may not become the Duke of Edinburgh one day, as was always expected.

The decision belongs to Prince Charles when he becomes King — and he's not so keen on his brother inheriting the Dukedom and title long held by their father Prince Philip, a new report claims.

Prince Charles doesn't want Edward to be Duke of Edinburgh

Context: Prince Philip was the Duke of Edinburgh from 1947 until his death in 2021. And it was always believed that Prince Edward would inherit the Dukedom after his father's death and when Prince Charles becomes King.

Prince Edward expects to inherit the Dukedom of Edinburgh from Prince Philip.

When Prince Philip died, the Dukedom was automatically inherited by his eldest son, Prince Charles, who is the Duke of Edinburgh today.

But the title will merge with the Crown when Charles ascends the throne, at which time it was expected he would recreate it for Prince Edward, the new Duke of Edinburgh.

However, today, The Sunday Times reported that Prince Charles is "reluctant to hand it over" to his brother as he looks ahead to his time on the throne.

A source told The Times: "The prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward."

Another sourced added: "Edinburgh won't go to them (the Wessexes) as far as the prince is concerned."

Prince Edward promised Duke of Edinburgh on wedding day?

Prince Charles's potential refusal would be surprising, given that Prince Edward had been expecting to inherit the Dukedom since his wedding day in 1999.

At the time, the BBC reported that the royals "agreed" Edward would become the new Duke of Edinburgh. The decision comes from his work with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, founded by Prince Philip in 1956.

Prince Charles reportedly doesn't want Prince Edward becoming Duke of Edinburgh.

In any case, it will be an interesting storyline to follow when Prince Charles ascends the throne. Another recent report said he is the one looking to keep Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's children from becoming a Prince and Princess when he's King.

Not only that, but royal fans have long wondered if Prince Charles will push to make Duchess Camilla a Queen when he's on the throne.
