It was just announced by Buckingham Palace that Prince Philip, Duke passed away at the age of 99. Great Britain, the Commonwealth and the entire world are mourning one of the most recognized faces of the British royal family. 

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is dead at 99

He was born on June 10 1921 as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark and served as a naval officer until he married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947 and he became the Duke of Edinburgh the morning of their wedding. He served as the Queen's consort, an adviser to her majesty and her closest friend for 73 years. He was an officer of the Royal Navy, the British Army as well as the Royal Air Force.

Prince Philip is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren as well as ten great-grandchildren, and 2 more great-grandchildren on the way. He had officially retired from royal duties in August 2017 when carried out his final solo engagement. Until then, he had completed 22,219 solo engagements ever since joining the royal family in 1952.

Buckingham Palace's statement reads: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

No date has been set yet for his memorial service, which will most likely be held at Westminster Abbey. We join those who mourn the loss of one of the most popular royals across the globe. May he rest in peace.
