It is well known that the relationship between Princess Diana and Prince Charles had some ups and downs, but now a new documentary about the royal couple reveals a couple of interesting facts on how Prince Charles proposed marriage to his then girlfriend Lady Diana, who reportedly had a very particular reaction. It seems that the wedding proposal was not as romantic as we would have imagined!

The new documentary Charles and Di: The truth behind their wedding revealed that Prince Charles actually just popped up the question in a very practical way. According to "Majesty" magazine editor Ingrid Seward, he proposed to her on February 6th 1981 in the nursery at Windsor Castle, a spot he picked "because the nursery is like a home." Seward explained that after the proposal Diana reacted in a very atypical way: “She burst out laughing. I think that was probably her nerves. She didn’t think it was the most romantic of proposals but she had the proposal.”

Royal author Christopher Wilson also revealed some interesting facts about Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage, he explained that Diana "didn’t see it coming", and added that Prince Charles “didn’t pick her up in his arms and embrace or do any of the things we might do when we propose marriage to the one that we love.” Instead, Prince Charles called his mother "simply to say ‘there, I’ve done it now. You’ve asked me to get married to somebody and I’ve fixed it.’ What he’d done was he’d finally found a wife.”

What did Princess Diana do after Prince Charles proposed to her?

During an interview with Andrew Morton, Diana revealed that Prince Charles once asked her if she realized that one day she would be Queen, and she only said “I love you so much”. However, it is also true that she had some doubts about marrying him, such as she claims in the documentary Diana: In Her Own Wordswhere she explains that she had a conversation with her sisters in which she said: "I can’t marry him. I can’t do this.

Princess Diana also said that the wedding was the worst day of her life: "If I could write my own script I would have my husband go away with his woman [Camilla Parker Bowles] and never come back”, she said.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage was probably one of the most scandalous royal relationships of the last decades. The royal couple finally announced their separation in 1992. Lady Diana passed away in 1997 during a tragic car accident which opened up some conspiracy theories about her death. Afterwards, in 2005, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker.
