'The Crown' Will Continue Beyond Season 5 - Here's What We Know!

The Crown will have a sixth season! The news was just confirmed after reports had earlier suggested Netflix's royal drama would conclude with season 5. Here's what we know so far.

Royal (Netflix) watchers rejoice!

The Crown will have a sixth and final season. The Twitter account of Netflix UK & Ireland broke the news on Thursday morning, after it was previously thought the series would wrap up with its fifth season.

"News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix, in addition to the previously announced five!" the announcement read.

The streamer's Twitter account also went on to clarify the change in plans, quoting series writer and creator Peter Morgan: "As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons," he said.

Netflix confirms The Crown season 6 will happen

Viewers had originally been led to believe six seasons were in the cards, but in January 2020, Morgan had said that season 5 would be The Crown's last.

"So to summarise – we'll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton. We’re just half way through! Lovely," Netflix UK & Ireland added on Twitter.

The Crown season 4 should arrive in 2020

Fans still await the arrival of The Crown season 4, which is Olivia Colman's final season portraying Queen Elizabeth II. We don't have a confirmed release date for season 4 just yet, but it's been reported that a November or December 2020 premiere on Netflix appears likely.

The Crown cast will change in season 5

Following season 4, actress Imelda Staunton will then take over as the Queen for season 5 and, now, season 6 too. Last week, Lesley Manville was also announced for the role of Princess Margaret in season 5.

Season 5 was expected to take the series into the early few years of the 21st century, so it now appears that, with a sixth season, there will be an additional 10 episodes to explore this more recent period of royal history.
