Eric Dane Made His ALS Diagnosis Public

“I was diagnosed with ALS,” the actor revealed in April 2025 in an interview with People magazine. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive disease that attacks the nervous system, leading to muscle atrophy, paralysis, and difficulties with speaking, swallowing, and breathing. There is currently no cure.

Last summer, Dane shared that his right arm had “stopped working completely.” As a former competitive swimmer, he spoke openly about his fears, particularly regarding the strength of his legs. Despite the devastating diagnosis, he remained determined to make the most of his time with his family and continue working as long as possible.

Final Days With His Family

In a statement reported by t-online.de, his relatives said:

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. They also emphasized that Dane was “eternally grateful” for the outpouring of love and support he received following his diagnosis. His loved ones said they wish to honor his memory quietly.

Eric Dane grew up in California and moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue acting. He landed early roles in series such as 'Saved by the Bell,' 'Married… with Children,' and 'Charmed,' before appearing in the blockbuster 'X-Men: The Last Stand.'

His international breakthrough came in the mid-2000s when he joined 'Grey’s Anatomy' as plastic surgeon "Dr. Mark Sloan" — affectionately nicknamed “McSteamy” by fans. He played the role from 2006 to 2012 and made a brief return to the series in 2021. In 2019, he revealed a darker side of his talent as the complex family patriarch "Cal Jacobs" in the HBO drama 'Euphoria.'

Becoming a Voice for ALS Awareness

Following his diagnosis in 2025, Dane used his public platform to raise awareness about ALS. His family described him as “a passionate advocate for awareness and research,” determined to give hope to others facing the disease.

In October, he was photographed in a wheelchair at an airport. When asked by a paparazzo what message he had for concerned fans, he replied: “Don’t lose faith.”

According to Image, Dane continued working on his memoir until shortly before his death. The book, scheduled for publication in 2026, was intended to reflect on pivotal moments in his life — from his first day on the set of 'Grey’s Anatomy' to the life-changing news of his diagnosis.
