- Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars
- The Academy hasn't taken action yet
- Many fellow actors are appalled at what happened
One of the most dissenting voices that have decried what happened without much jubilation has been legendary actor and comedian Jim Carrey who has believes Will Smith should have been arrested on the spot for assault. Carrey sat down with Gayle King for CBS This Morning, where the talk of the town became a major point of discussion.
Jim Carrey Pulls None Of His Punches!
“I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” Carrey said.
The host, Gayle King, further speculated: “If anyone else had walked from the audience and done that, they would’ve been escorted out by security or maybe even arrested.” To which Carrey interrupted: “He should have been.”
Carrey's comments have been seconded by many fans who feel that the rules simply don't apply to famous faces, specially when they are nominated for a big award like Will Smith was. The issue of pressing charges is also a big question that looms over the incident. Chris Rock refused to do so. But should there be criminal charges laid against Smith?
The Smack That Keeps On Giving
“I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200m because that video is going to be there forever - If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cos they said words.” said Carrey very firmly
The fact is, Smith's behavior really damaged the entire evening and some sort of sanction should be imposed on him by the Academy. “I don’t have anything against Will Smith. He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment” said Carrey to conclude.
Rumors of Smith's Oscar for Best Actor being withdrawn are still afoot, but that doesn't seem likely given the severity of the punishment. However, something must be done if the Academy is to save face...
