- King Charles rules the United Kingdom
- After his reign it will go to his descendants
- But in what order?
On May 6, 2023, King Charles became King of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and some overseas territories. As Charles III, he took over the regency after his mother Queen Elizabeth II (†96).
Who will sit on the throne after King Charles has already been precisely determined? First are the direct descendants of the monarch. That is why Prince William currently occupies first place in the line of succession.

These royals are at the top of the line to the throne
Since the regency is always passed down in a direct line, Prince William's eldest son Prince George lands in second place. He is followed by his siblings Charlotte in third and Louis in fourth.
Since Prince William has no direct descendants other than his three children, the line of succession continues with the next descendant of King Charles: Prince Harry. He is in fifth place. Sixth and seventh place go to his children Archie and Lilibet.
That would exhaust King Charles' direct descendants, but the line of succession goes further. Next in line are his closest relatives. Actually, his sister, Princess Anne, should be next. After all, she is the second child of Queen Elizabeth II after Charles and closest to him in the line of descent.
However, the rule of the firstborn did not yet apply at her birth; instead, male offspring were preferred. That is why Anne only comes after all her other brothers in the line of succession.
This is how the succession continues
Instead of Princess Anne, Prince Andrew is in eighth place, with his daughter Beatrice and her daughter Sienna in ninth and tenth place. In eleventh place is her sister Princess Eugenie, with her son August following one rank behind her. Eugenie is currently pregnant with her second child, who will then come in 13th place.
The youngest son of the late Queen, Prince Edward, comes next in line. He is followed by his children James and Louise. Finally, Princess Anne is in 16th place, and her children and grandchildren complete the top 20.

Of course, there are also far more places in the succession. However, these hardly receive any attention. After all, it is unlikely that most of these royals will actually end up on the throne one day. So, except for Charles' direct descendants, the place in the line of succession has hardly any significance among the blue bloods.
