'Dune': David Lynch Says He Has "Zero Interest" In 2020 Remake Of His 1984 Film

Where Are The Stars Of 'Twin Peaks' Today?

Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel Dune is set for a new big screen adaptation in December 2020. Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) is behind the new film, which shared its first preview images last week.

The film was earlier adapted by director David Lynch back in 1984. In a new interview with THR, Lynch was asked about his feelings on the upcoming remake of the film he once made.

"I have zero interest in Dune," the now 74-year-old director replied.

"Because it was a heartache for me. It was a failure and I didn't have final cut. I've told this story a billion times. It’s not the film I wanted to make. I like certain parts of it very much — but it was a total failure for me."

Lynch's adaptation of the film, which starred Kyle MacLachlan in the lead role, received a mixed to negative reception at the time. The director later disowned the movie due a lack of control over the final cut - as he referenced in the new interview.

Lynch also commented on rumours surrounding future projects with Netflix.

"There’s all kinds of rumors," he said. "I've got a show called What Did Jack Do? on Netflix right now. It’s a great show about a monkey. It’s something you’ve got to see. And it will really help you in quarantine."

Lynch alluded to his short film, What Did Jack Do?, which came to Netflix in January 2020. But it doesn't seem that he has any concrete plans to bring new content to Netflix just yet.

The Twin Peaks creator did, however, say that he feels his future work would more likely find a home on television than on the big screen.

"Right now, feature films in my book are in big trouble, except for the big blockbusters," he began. "The art house films, they don’t stand a chance. They might go to a theater for a week and if it’s a Cineplex they go to the smallest theater in the setup, and then they go to Blu-ray or On Demand. The big-screen experience right now is gone. Gone, but not forgotten."

"But I really love a continuing story, and cable television I say is the new art house. You have total freedom. The sound isn’t as good as a great theater; the picture isn’t as big — but TVs are getting bigger and bigger and better and better, so there’s hope. And then you have this chance for a continuing story, so it’s the new art house, I say."

Before What Did Jack Do?, Lynch's last project was 2017's Twin Peaks: The Return, a limited series follow-up to his Twin Peaks television series from the early 1990s.

He's also known for films including Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, and Mulholland Drive.
