Euphoria fans were greeted with quite the surprise this week. Although season 2 of the HBO series will not premiere until mid-2021, fans will receive a holiday gift and find out what happened to "Rue" and "Jules" by year's end. Through her Instagram account, actress Zendaya announced the return of Euphoria in two special episodes that will premiere on HBO in December.

Euphoria restarts on HBO with special episodes in 2020

Without previous notice, Zendaya surprised her social media followers by announcing the return of Euphoria with the two special episodes.

"We really missed them. Two special Euphoria episodes coming soon. First one December 6th on HBO," wrote Zendaya, the recent Emmy winner.

In the Instagram picture, we see the reflection of her character, "Rue," in what appears to be the eye of "Jules" (Hunter Schafer), her best friend and love interest in the show's first season.

New Euphoria episodes before season 2: What could happen?

According to Variety, the first special episode, titled "Trouble Don't Last Always," will dramatically follow the events of the season 1 finale, showing "Rue's" relapse into drugs and how she spends the Christmas holiday after leaving "Jules" on a train to the city.

Filmed in accordance with precautions amid the pandemic, the Euphoria special episodes will serve as a bridge between the first and second seasons. Season 2 was scheduled to begin production in March of this year, before the pandemic hit pause on that plan. Mid-2021 is the new expected premiere date for season 2.

It's expected that the title, synopsis, and release date of the second special episode of will be announced soon. Zendaya took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria season 1.
